Ramayan Episode 11 - Rama Meets Hanuman and Sugriva | A Story of True Friendship and Devotion

Video by: Katha Kids

Video language: EnglishLength: 1:22

Before you watch

A brief English telling of Hanuman Ji’s introduction and Shri Ram’s friendship with Sugriva, ending with recall questions. It compresses several Ramayana chapters and adds imagined dialogue; the fire ceremony belongs to the later alliance scene. The publisher discloses AI-made visuals or sound. The drawings are an adaptation, not a historical reconstruction. Practise introductions with familiar people, and draw a friendship symbol instead of copying the fire ceremony.

Two travellers by Pampa

Rama and Lakshmana had reached the country near Pampa while searching for Sita. The landscape was beautiful, but their journey was not a holiday. They were looking for help. They carried bows and had the bearing of princes, yet their clothes and matted hair belonged to a life spent in the forest.

Nearby lived Sugriva, who had been separated from his brother Vali and feared him. The arrival of two armed strangers worried Sugriva. He could not tell from a distance whether they were friends or a danger. He asked Hanuman, his trusted minister, to approach them and find out who they were.

Hanuman went in the form of an ascetic. He did not begin with a threat or a demand. He greeted the travellers respectfully and spoke about what he had noticed: their strength, their forest clothing and the sadness of their journey. He wanted to understand the people before him, but he did not yet know their story.

A careful introduction

The brothers listened as Hanuman spoke. They did not answer immediately. Instead of treating their silence as a quarrel, Hanuman explained more clearly why he had come. He introduced himself as Hanuman, a vanara and a minister of Sugriva. His master, he told them, wished for friendship.

Now the meeting had a purpose the brothers could understand. This visitor had a name, a connection to someone they were seeking and a message to bring. His respectful manner mattered, but so did the information he offered. Friendly words become more useful when they help people understand what is happening.

Rama was pleased by Hanuman’s speech. He spoke to Lakshmana about the care and learning it revealed. Hanuman expressed himself clearly, without rushing or speaking harshly. Rama recognised someone who could carry an important message well. He asked Lakshmana to reply to Sugriva’s minister.

The first step towards friendship

Lakshmana answered that they had heard of Sugriva and were looking for him. They welcomed the possibility Hanuman had brought. Imagine the change in that moment: a meeting that had begun with uncertainty now offered a way forward. The travellers and the messenger could see that their purposes might meet.

Hanuman was glad. His task had not been to win an argument or show that he knew everything about the strangers. It was to open a conversation that could lead to an alliance. The introduction had worked. The next step would be to bring Rama and Sugriva together and let their friendship begin.

Later, Hanuman would cross the ocean and carry a mountain in service of Rama. Here his help began with words. He observed, introduced himself and made the message clear. It is a quieter beginning than a mighty leap, but it matters: before people can help one another, they often need a chance to understand one another.

Let’s talk about it

What changed when Hanuman explained who he was and why he had come?

One more question

How can you help someone understand a request without speaking more loudly?

A little wisdom to keep: Clear, respectful words can open the way to understanding.

A message that makes sense · 5 minutes

With someone you know, pretend you are inviting them to a family story session.

  1. Explain what you are inviting them to and when it will happen.
  2. Let them ask one question, then answer it without interrupting.
  3. Swap roles. Name one detail that made each invitation easy to understand.

Sources & tradition

An original retelling of Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda 3. It includes Hanuman’s ascetic guise, his introduction as Sugriva’s minister, Rama’s appreciation of his speech and Lakshmana’s reply. The formal Rama–Sugriva alliance follows this introduction; it has not already happened here. Our reflections and imagined observations are not a translation of the verse or its commentary.
